While the journey towards integrating greener practices can be complex, for Jays Transport it was an opportunity to drive real change.
The family-owned business, with a fleet of 60 vehicles, provides first-class logistics and haulage services across the UK and Europe. Established in 1988, the company has been at the forefront of promoting and implementing environmentally sustainable practices.
This dedication to sustainability is just one of the reasons why Jays Transport turned to Risk Evolves to guide them through the EcoVadis process. They wanted to stay ahead of customer expectations and make meaningful progress in their sustainability journey.
That commitment has paid off. With the help of Risk Evolves, Jays Transport has achieved a silver EcoVadis award, ranking the firm in the top 15% of companies evaluated worldwide.
What is EcoVadis?
First established in 2007, EcoVadis has grown to become the largest sustainability ratings provider globally, assessing more than 130,000 companies, across 175 countries worldwide.
A global leader in corporate sustainability ratings, it enables companies to reduce risk, drive improvement and accelerate positive impact on our planet and society.
The EcoVadis assessment evaluates sustainability criteria across four core themes: environmental, labour and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement. At the end of the evaluation, a score out of 100 will be awarded, which translates into four badges of bronze, silver, gold and platinum.
Collaboration for success
The journey to silver accreditation is not a simple task – it requires continuous effort and commitment from the business.
Following a recommendation by the Road Haulage Association (RHA), Jays Transport contacted us for help. We first supported the company in achieving its ISO 9001 certification and then our risk and compliance specialist Phill Davies guided the business through its EcoVadis assessment.
For Ben Walker, Commercial Sales Manager UK and EU at Jays Transport, it was important to engage the expertise and skills of the Risk Evolves team to see them through the process. “As a business, our environmental credentials and initiatives are a key focus,” explained Ben. “Phill and our compliance team worked incredibly hard in collating the data and putting it into the report.”
Having accurate documentation is essential for EcoVadis to validate a company’s sustainability management. Due to the nature of the business, the data was collated from key areas such as emissions, mileage and resource usage. This included scope 1 emissions, which are under the firm’s direct control, such as fuel, and scope 2 emissions from the electricity an organisation buys1.
The team also looked at internal data, including how staff travel to and from work, paper usage and recycling.
“The ongoing communication and engagement from Risk Evolves was brilliant as we had scheduled meetings and regular updates,” added Ben.
“We have worked with Phill for three years and I can’t sing his praises enough. He is professional, approachable and very knowledgeable, with a wide understanding of compliance.”
Future plans
As with ISO Standards, EcoVadis requires an annual re-evaluation.
Jays Transport is already looking towards the future, collating data with an aim of achieving a gold EcoVadis award and looking towards ISO 14001 – the environmental management standard.
And the business’s commitment to sustainability extends further than accreditation as it has implemented a series of new initiatives to minimise environmental impact. This includes investing in eco-friendly vehicles, more efficient route and delivery planning to reduce fuel consumption and carbon footprint, as well as engaging in responsible waste management and energy conservation.
“Our focus is on our environmental credentials,” explained Ben. “We believe this will keep us ahead of the market and the industry, and it is what people expect from their suppliers.
As a business, if you are not investing and actively improving your environmental credentials, you are at risk of being left behind. Any organisations that haven’t dipped their toe in [sustainability] is a real cause for concern. Sustainability is only going to become more important for every industry and sector.”
